Lock Picking Course
Station 2 - Kwikset Pin Tumbler Deadbolt (1)
At this station you will try to pick the Kwikset pin tumbler lock using the scrubbing method.
Kwikset Locks: Kwikset locks are very popular for existing single family homes and in new construction. They are carried by almost all hardware stores. Unfortunately (or fortunately for us!) they are very easy locks to pick.
Count pins: Take the flat side of a pick or your wrench and insert it all the way into the key way. Compress the key pins and slide it out slowly. Count the number of clicks you hear. Each click is a pin popping back into position as the tool slides out. Try this several times to get an accurate count. Also, note the amount of force it required to compress the pins.
Scrubbing: The basic principle of scrubbing is to apply a light torque while moving the pick back and forth in a "scrubbing" or "raking" motion across all the key pins. As each pin is pushed up to the shear line the drive pin is caught in hull due to the torque. When all the pins are caught the plug will turn and the lock opens.
