Lock Picking Course
Station 1 - Preliminaries (3)
Exploded Lock: Take a look at the exploded lock and identify each of the components that make up a typical pin tumbler lock. These components will be referred to during the course so it will be important that you can recognize and understand each of them.
Important Components are:
Plug - The plug holds the key pins and when it rotates the lock opens
Hull - The Hull holds the drive pins and the springs.
Key Pins - These are the pins that touch the key when it is inserted
Drive Pins - These pins are "driven" by the key pins and remain in the Hull
Other Concepts:
Shear Line - The interface between the Plug and the Hull. When all the pins line up at the Shear Line, the plug will rotate and the lock will open.
Key way - The slot in the Hull in which the key (or pick tools) are inserted.
Other Materials: You may want to read through other materials near or around the table.
